Arsenal are still leading the Premier League, but only just. Manchester City and Aston Villa are hot on their heels. The Gunners face Villa tomorrow in what could be a pivotal game in this season's title race.
Mikel Arteta's side has only lost two Premier League games this season. The first was against Liverpool early on, and then to Villa at the start of December. Emiliano Buendía's goal in added time sparked jubilant celebrations at Villa Park.
The Gunners have since won five straight games in all competitions. Arteta will be using the defeat to Villa when the two sides meet this week. He was quoted on social media by Connor Humm, saying, "If you use that motivation and that anger in the right manner, for sure."
There is a worry that Arsenal is a club that will get too emotional in these situations. Their desire for revenge could see them lose focus on playing their usual game. The Gunners have been runners-up in the Premier League in the last three seasons, and this is weighing heavily.
Arsenal are desperate to finally get over the line and win the title. However, much like with England in their search for a major trophy, the longer the wait goes on, the harder it is to break the duck.
Mikel Arteta will not be the only one seeking revenge
Villa is, of course, managed by Unai Emery, who was Arsene Wenger's successor at Arsenal. However, it did not work out for Emery at the Emirates. His biggest feat was taking the Gunners to the Europa League final.
Emery rebuilt his reputation back in Spain with Villarreal and is now working wonders at Villa Park. He took a team that had relegation fears under Steven Gerrard and turned them into one that regularly competes in European competition.
Villa are dark horses for the Premier League title despite their horrendous start to the season, where they did not win any of their first five games. Emery has chosen his jobs wisely since leaving Arsenal. He even turned down Newcastle United after the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia took over.
It appears a perfect fit for Emery at Villa Park, where he has been able to build his squad. His failure at Arsenal is a blip on a very impressive CV. He will seek to get one over the Gunners again on Tuesday night.
