Mikel Arteta said one thing Arsenal fans often forget about David Raya

Mikel Arteta was full of praise for David Raya in his recent press conference, even highlighting one thing Arsenal fans might not have known. Raya is a hard worker for Arsenal and he goes a step beyond in training, even enough to be hailed as 'outstanding' by Arteta, who is known for requiring 100% as a minimum.

David Raya has been a star of the show for the Gunners so far this season. If Arsenal win the Premier League, they have the Spanish shot-stopper to thank. He's been in exceptional form all season, and he's certainly done enough to be involved in the Ballon d'Or conversation.

Mikel Arteta thinks David Raya is 'outstanding' in training

Mikel Arteta credited David Raya for his outstanding efforts in training, and he even took a look back at his career to date, stating that it's a testament to how much he's matured on the journey he's been on.

“What David has done for us in the last few years is incredible,” said Arteta. “His work ethic, his mentality, his approach to every training session, it’s outstanding, it’s phenomenal."

“It’s incredible, his journey, the way he has matured, the way he had to earn things.”

When you look at David Raya, it's easy to assume that he has a gift that other goalkeepers don't. You'd be right to hink that; he is the best goalkeeper in the world right now, after all.

However, what is easy to forget is that certain traits are not natural; they are learned. Raya has to work hard on his craft, and public praise for workload and commitment levels are not easy to come by with Arteta.

David Raya was built for this all-or-nothing Arsenal system

Arteta has built a culture similar to that of his childhood friend, Xabi Alonso. The culture is simple: 100% commitment is the bare minimum.

So, for Raya to be hailed as 'outstanding' in training is quite something. While it's not surprising, considering his career journey so far, it is often overlooked.

Goalkeepers do not have it easy. Sure, the position isn't as physically taxing as some others in the game, but who is the first person you'd turn to after conceding a goal?

Raya holds himself to an incredibly high standard. He is one of the most humble characters in an Arsenal jersey, but you get the sense that his inner monologue is different to the one he portrays.

He wants to be the best in the world. He listens to no external noise (like that which was cast on him by Aaron Ramsdale fans when he was first signed), or if he does, he uses that as fuel to be the number one in the world. That kind of mentality is what it takes to be a Premier League champion.
