Arsenal is closing in on Viktor Gyokeres in what is a great deal, but that good mood might not last long.

I might be in Australia, folks, but I can hear the collective exasperation coming from Arsenal fans, and considering the summer the club has had, that's surprising.

But there's good reason for it, though.

With the Gunners edging closer to completing a deal for Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres to finally give Mikel Arteta a world-class striker to get on the end of the endless chances created, the mood around the Emirates has, naturally, been positive.

Seen as the one piece of business that would put the Gunners in a position to seriously challenge Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title.

But alas, the football gods might have intervened and stolen all of our joy.

Alexander Isak update could be cruel for Arsenal fans

Arsenal was thought to be interested in the Newcastle star, but the money needed to sign him, plus the Magpies making it clear he isn't for sale, made the club look elsewhere.

But not all clubs it seems.

And yes, the football gods have as crual and twisted sense of humor.

Why? Because it is being reported that defending Premier League champs Liverpool are eyeing the Newcastle striker.

You've got to be kidding me, right?

"Liverpool are reportedly set to make an approach to sign long-term Arsenal target Alexander Isak," Football London's Tom Canton wrote. "Suggestions are that the Reds are considering a bid in excess of £120million to land the striker who Newcastle United maintain is not for sale."

Would that not be the cruelest thing ever for the Gunners to finally get some firepower to at the very least, be on level footing with Liverpool and City, only for the Reds to go and land perhaps one of the best strikers in world football?

Granted, Newcastle has stated Isak isn't for sale, and he better not be.

The Gunners have just gotten the artillery needed to enter this fight and hold their own, they don't need their enemies upgrading.

Isak to Liverpool wouldn't be fair. But then again, football rarely is.
