Martin Odegaard is the rightful captain of this Arsenal team. He has been at the club for a very long time, and has been able to learn the ins and outs, the do's and don't's during his time here, and there is no argument about the fact that he is one of the more experienced players in the squad.
Even though he did not quite work out at Real Madrid, it was obvious that he learned a lot from his time at the club, and the players that were present there.
It is also clear that for a young team like Arsenal's, a young, selfless, calm captain who has been at the club for a decent amount of time is the right choice.
However, for some reason, Tony Adams did not think so. Adams was of the opinion that Arsenal need a different captain at the start of the season, even though Arsenal players had collectively decided based on a convincing poll that Odegaard would continue in the role.
Now we know Tony Adams was completely wrong about Martin Odegaard
When asked about what Adams said, Odegaard simply replied in September: ""I don’t care that much, to be honest.
"Everyone can have their opinion and say what they want, and I’m all right with that. I can’t care about what everyone says.
"There’s a lot of negative and positive things to say, but I can’t let it affect me. That’s what I’ve thought throughout my career."
It is fair to say Odegaard, Mikel Arteta, and the rest of the Arsenal squad was right about keeping the Norwegian as the captain of the team, and Adams, well, wasn't.
Nothing against Rice as a captain, either - he is one of the leaders of this team, too - but captaincy is more than just being the best player or performing in the big games. It makes the team gel when everyone shares the same opinion about someone's leadership, and someone who has been there throughout the 'process', and knows the club well enough, and is well respected in the locker room would do well as captain.
The result? Well, Arsenal have now won the league under his leadership for the first time in over 20 years. They are in the Champions League final. They are at the start of a potential dynasty, and even though there have been some on-field problems with Odegaard when it comes to injuries, his leadership has never been in doubt.
