Arsenal has closed the summer transfer window with the signing of Piero Hincapie on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen. The Ecuadorian defender is already in London and has recently given his first official interview as a Gunner, setting up a huge goal as the new number 5:

In his own words, Hincapie said: “I always want to win trophies for this club, to make a name for myself, and to leave a mark. I want to get off to a good start quickly, and that's the most important thing,” said Hincapie in his interview with the club.

Hincapie also added that he wants to “gel as best as he can” with the new teammates to have a good season. The defender also said he and former Gunner Granit Xhaka had talked about Arsenal while together at Bayer Leverkusen:

“He spoke wonders about the club and how he felt during his spell here. I loved the conversation that we had at that point, and it wasn't that recent. He did send me a message recently, though. He always spoke well of the club.”

The Ecuador international also talked about tactics and how he can perform his best at Arsenal, highlighting his preference to play as a centre-back:

“I think I can bring a lot of courage. I do my job well. I want to show my qualities as I've been doing for years. I want to give so much for this club. My best position is centre-back. I've played many games at full-back as well, but I think I'm best at centre-back. As for my qualities, I'm pacey and I like carrying the ball forward as well as being a leader on the pitch.”

The 23-year-old has joined the Gunners on a season-long loan, but it has been reported that the deal includes a buy option at the end of the 25/26 season. Piero Hincapie is another Arsenal signing this season who was rumored to join Tottenham, following the footsteps of Eberechi Eze, who signed from Crystal Palace and debuted last Sunday.

After joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2021, Hincapie earned over 160 appearances and was a starter during the 23/24 Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles. The defender has also been a starter for the Ecuadorian national squad since 2021, recording 46 caps and helping Ecuador secure its spot on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
