I do not want to paint competition as a bad thing, but…

Arsenal have given their left flank much attention over recent weeks. Gabriel Martinelli started there for the first two games, then Leandro Trossard got the nod for Brighton, and since that match Arsenal have signed Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea.

Our loanee boasts lots of Premier League experience (so no adaptation is needed), while his time at the training ground over the international break will likely have him fit and firing right away – starting at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As headaches go, this is a particularly nice one, and there will of course be many games over the campaign so everyone will earn minutes. But the aforementioned trio are each hungry for a first-team berth and the tough fixtures ahead suggest Arteta can ill-afford to make a wrong call here.

Temporary vacancies in midfield could help, especially if Havertz is forced to drop back (thus freeing up a frontline spot).

After that, the real fun begins.
