Arsenal are now in the race to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window. They are thought to be on the verge of signing Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna but Mikel Arteta is not done there. In fact, he would like to make yet another defensive appointment and he is even considering using Eddie Nketiah as part of a swap deal.
But why exactly do Arsenal want to sign Marc Guehi? After all, the club has two exceptional centre backs in their ranks with William Saliba and Gabriel solidifying their partnership for many years to come.
That said, here are 3 reasons why Arsenal want to secure a Marc Guehi transfer in this summer transfer window...
3 reasons why Arsenal target Marc Guehi transfer this summer
1. His incredible leadership quality
Arsenal are not short of leaders but from Mikel Arteta's perspective, the more leadership figures he can collect in the Arsenal lineup, the better. This is perhaps the main pull factor for Marc Guehi, who proved his exceptional leadership qualities at this summer's EURO 2024.
As per Football London, Phil Foden of Man City complimented Marc Guehi for his leadership qualities in the England camp for EURO 2024. Foden said: "'He [Guehi] has been a leader, I know him well from obviously playing with him and he's not fazed by anything. I feel like he has come into the team and shown his qualities."
So, Guehi is both a leader by personality and by example. These are two excellent attributes which will benefit Arsenal going forward.
2. Excellent recovery runs
When out of possession, Arsenal like to operate with a high-line. To achieve this, they require centre backs with excellent recovery runs and the speed to match. By signing Marc Guehi, they would only be adding to their pre-existing ability to recover well.
Not so much for England but more for Crystal Palace, Marc Guehi has shown an incredible ability to play as part of a high line, with his speed allowing him to bomb back to make recovery tackles. This means that Arsenal would be afforded the luxury to play a high-line without sacrificing defensive security.
3. A handy two-footed ability
We all know that Mikel Arteta loves versatility in his players. This is why he often targets players with the ability to play in more than one position, particularly in the defence. Marc Guehi is no different since he showcases a great two-footed ability.
If Guehi were to sign for Arsenal, he would be able to play either side of the defensive partnership without sacrificing any quality. Admittedly, this is a large pull factor for Mikel Arteta.
