3 reasons why Arsenal are right not to sign striker this summer

  • Arsenal have had a quiet transfer window
  • It looks like there will be no striker purchase
  • There is other business that the club must do first

For months, Arsenal fans have clamoured (in vain, it appears) for a new striker, yet there are many reasons that can justify the non-prioritisation of such targets.

Transfer deadline day is now less than one week off and, after a quiet summer, it seems the Gunners are happy to go again with much the same squad as last year – perhaps eyeing one more addition after Mikel Merino in advance of next Friday (fingers crossed!).

That prospect will bring angst for some supporters and arguably does not befit a team that wants/needs to end its lengthy wait for silverware this term, especially after their recent near-misses.

But it still (might) make sense not to chase a #9, and here are three factors to help explain the club’s ostensibly shared position.

3 reasons why Arsenal are right not to prioritise a striker investment this summer

1. Our current strikers are great

Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus arrived here over the past two summers, and both are more than capable of carrying the striker torch.

Okay, neither of them is particularly clinical – boasting seasonal bests of 13 and 14 goals respectively (in the Premier League) – and the latter’s constant injury troubles mean he cannot be relied upon over a long campaign.

However, between them – especially Havertz – they tick just about every other box: strong, good at linking the play, can drop deep and press voraciously from the front. Add to that Havertz’s huge aerial threat and Jesus’ rediscovered fitness and Arsenal have the makings of an excellent strike-force.

They are great striking options in themselves, and maybe too good to justify a £70m+ spend for ‘improvement’.
