The sight of Arturo Vidal waltzing in behind a hapless Arsenal defence before dinking his finish over David Ospina depicted just how far the Gunners had fallen.

The end of Arsene Wenger's reign in north London was drenched in disillusion and toxicity, with some of the club's sorriest episodes of modern times arriving against Bayern Munich.

The two clubs have encountered one another on numerous occasions in contemporary times, and Mikel Arteta will be aiming to put a few things right in their upcoming duels.

Here's a complete rundown of Arsenal's head-to-head record against Bayern.

These two have a little bit of history before their frequent meetings in the 2010s. Arsenal's first-ever meeting with Bayern arrived in December 2000, and it was a belter!

Thierry Henry and Nwankwo Kanu thrust Arsenal into a 2-0 lead, but Bayern fought back to earn a 2-2 group stage draw. Bayern edged the reverse fixture 1-0 thanks to a Giovane Elber, with both teams progressing into the quarter-finals. Bayern would go on to win the competition.

Arsenal's first victory over the Germans was secured four years later in 2005, but their 1-0 win at Highbury wasn't enough to overturn a 3-1 first leg deficit.

Between 2013 and 2017, the two clubs met eight times - six of which were round of 16 fixtures. During this period, Bayern were regarded as one of Europe's premier outfits, with Arsenal entering each of the ties as underdogs.

The Gunners fought bravely in 2013/14, winning 2-0 at the Allianz but succumbing on away goals after losing the first leg at home 3-1. Mesut Ozil's early penalty miss proved crucial the following season as Pep Guardiola's Bavarians advanced into the last eight as 3-1 aggregate winners. Arsene Wenger's side once again avoided defeat in Germany but failed to advance.

Arsenal finally beat Bayern at the Emirates during the 2015/16 group stage. Guardiola's side were dominant for large swathes, but the hosts held the Germans at bay before striking twice late on to win 2-0. Bayern weren't so profligate in the reverse fixture as they recorded the first of three consecutive 5-1 victories.

The 2016/17 round of 16 meetings were nothing short of harrowing. Bayern were wildly superior over 180 minutes winning 10-2 on aggregate. Arjen Robben tore Arsenal to shreds at the Allianz before Wenger's men - reduced to ten men following Laurent Koscielny's dismissal - capitulated in the second half at the Emirates. Bayern were ruthless, tearing apart an understaffed backline time and time again.

A sense of apathy prevailed across north London, with Arsenal clearly so far behind Europe's elite.
