Arsenal summer signing returns to training ahead of PSG clash
- Mikel Merino has returned to training on Monday
- Spaniard suffered shoulder injury in first training session
- Could the midfielder play vs PSG?
Arsenal have received a massive injury boost ahead of their Champions League clash against PSG, with summer signing Mikel Merino recovering in time from a shoulder injury.
Merino, who was part of Spain's Euro 2024-winning squad, joined the club late on in the transfer window from Real Sociedad but is yet to feature for the Gunners after suffering a shoulder injury during his first training session at London Colney.
The midfielder is believed to have dislocated his shoulder following a collision with Gabriel, and some projected that he wouldn't feature for the club until after the October international break. However, after a month out, Merino is back in Arsenal training and seemingly back in contention.
Mikel Merino returns to Arsenal training ahead of PSG clash
Merino's comeback isn't a total surprise given the positive update Mikel Arteta provided ahead of the Leicester game.
“Tomorrow [against Leicester] is too soon. Next week we’ll see,” the Gunners boss said. “He had partial training today [last Friday]."
Arsenal have carefully nursed Merino's recovery and only just started to expose him to contact again given the nature of his shoulder injury. However, Arteta said that the new arrival is desperate to get going in Arsenal colours, with the boss noting that they've been "trying to keep him in the cage". He's chomping at the bit!
Fortunately, it seems as if the seasoned midfielder won't have to wait much longer to make his Gunners bow. Merino was involved in training on Monday, and reports suggest he'll be in the matchday squad to face PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Riccardo Calafiori, who picked up a minor knee injury at the end of the Leicester win, and Takehiro Tomiyasu were also involved in training, but Ben White remains out of action and the full-back is unlikely to feature against the French champions.
