Well, it wasn't meant to be for Arsenal in the Champions League. After a quarterfinal tie which was fought right until the end, it was Bayern Munich who merged victorious.

What's annoying for Arsenal fans and indeed Mikel Arteta is that all 3 of the goals Bayern Munich scored against them throughout the two legs could have been avoided by tighter defensive structures.

Firstly, Serge Gnabry's goal would have been avoided if David Raya gave Gabriel more of an option and the Harry Kane penalty could have been avoided if Jakub Kiwior got tighter on Leroy Sane and didn't allow him as much space. But was any Arsenal player to blame for Joshua Kimmich heading home the winner at the Allianz Arena? Well, Thierry Henry thinks so...

As per CBS Sports (via HITC), Thierry Henry thinks Takehiro Tomiyasu could have also done more to defend against the pace and dribbling of Leroy Sane in the phase of play which resulted in Joshua Kimmich winning the tie.

In his own words, Henry said: “I invite you to look at what Tomiyasu does, so Martinelli has to defend and you are doing his job right now. You go all the way there (the ball is switched to Guerreiro out wide). Now, please stay with Tomiyasu. What is Leroy Sane going to do there? (He goes off the pitch) You (Tomiyasu) are looking at him."

“He can’t score! Close the gap. He can’t score!” screamed the legendary striker. “It’s dependent on you. What is he going to do? He isn’t even in the frame. This is where he was, I know I am going far, he was going there (Henry proceeds to walk out of the picture to demonstrate how far Sane went off the pitch). How is he going to score?! Close the gap!”

I have to say, I do agree with Thierry (who's surprised?!) - Tomiyasu has to do better there as it was this momentary blip which negated from a pretty positive performance otherwise.

Thierry Henry was offering devils advocate as a lot of the criticism after the goal was scored as on Gabriel Martinelli. Understandably, the Brazilian should've done better but at the end of the day, the main defensive onus should always be on the defenders.

As mentioned, Tomiyasu had a good performance otherwise but allowing Leroy Sane too much space is what ultimately cost Arsenal the tie. It's a great shame but now the attention must turn back to the Premier League.
