Fabrizio Romano has provided some bittersweet Arsenal transfer news, as fan favourite Aaron Ramsdale is set to leave the club to join Southampton.

We are now in the final two days of the summer transfer window and so far, Arsenal's business has been good. However, most of the business has revolved around player sales and loans out, which was necessary.

Heading into the transfer window, the future of Aaron Ramsdale was a focal point for Arsenal. The England international lost his place in the starting lineup last season, so a move away seemed inevitable.

Now that the transfer seems to be in motion, what has the Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano provided in the way of Arsenal transfer news this week?

Posting to X (formerly Twitter), Fabrizio Romano applied his trademark "here we go" label to the transfer, meaning Aaron Ramsdale is on the verge of joining Southampton.

Fabrizio Romano said that the agreed fee will see Arsenal pocket £24/25m and they will now proceed with Joan Garcia, having already agreed personal terms with the Espanyol goalkeeper.

In an update published this morning, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Aaron Ramsdale would complete his Southampton medical today (Thursday 29 August).

Aaron Ramsdale has been an exceptional goalkeeper for Arsenal. He will always be a fan favourite for the memories he provided to the club but unfortunately, it was the right time for him to leave the club.

As mentioned, Ramsdale lost his place in the starting eleven to David Raya. On loan last season, Raya won the Golden Glove award in the Premier League and after being signed permanently in the summer, the Spanish goalkeeper has begun the 2024/25 season with two more clean sheets.

Raya is certainly the preferred option and despite Mikel Arteta hinting at the start of last season that he could rotate Raya and Ramadale, this was never a realistic likelihood.

Ramsdale will hope to impress the new England boss, whoever it may be, throughout the season with Southampton. He faces a battle to keep the Saints in the Premier League, which he is best-placed to achieve.

Arsenal fans will be sad to see Ramsdale go but it was a move which had to be made. Now, we can only wish Aaron Ramsdale the very best for his future.
