Arsenal's final game before the October international break sees them take on a struggling Southampton side at the Emirates.

While Russell Martin said after Monday night's defeat to Bournemouth that he "didn't recognise" his team, Arsenal produced a performance of which many have grown familiar on Tuesday night. The Gunners cruised past Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League to seal their first win of the league phase.

Mikel Arteta's title hopefuls remain unbeaten in 2024/25, although they were handed a scare by Leicester last weekend when a stunning James Justin brace helped the Foxes restore parity in the second half after falling 2-0 behind. Eventually, Arsenal's unrelenting pressure told and they scored twice in a dramatic 4-2 win.

The Emirates faithful will appreciate a more tranquil afternoon when the Saints come to town. Russell Martin's side earned promotion via the play-offs last season and were projected to struggle before the season got underway. While their business late in the transfer window undoubtedly bolstered their squad, Southampton are going to find it hard to pick up points this season. They've notched just one thus far.

Arsenal vs Southampton Head-to-Head Record

Southampton undoubtedly played a role in why Arsenal failed to win the 2022/23 Premier League title. Despite finishing rock bottom, they took four points off the Gunners, and the last meeting between the pair was an infamous 3-3 draw at the Emirates which crippled Arsenal's title charge.

Mikel Arteta has overseen just two wins against the Saints in six meetings, with the club's last victory arriving on 11 December 2021.

  • Arsenal Team News

Arteta confirmed that Jurrien Timber's substitution was precautionary on Tuesday night, but it wouldn't be a surprise if the Dutchman wasn't risked this weekend. Ben White could return to the starting XI if he recovers in time from his injury.

Takehiro Tomiyasu is back in training and potentially in contention, as is Mikel Merino after he made his Gunners bow in midweek.

However, the hosts will not be able to call upon Martin Odegaard, Kieran Tierney, and Oleksandr Zinchenko for Southampton's visit.

Predicted Arsenal lineup vs Southampton: Raya; Calafiori, Saliba, Gabriel, Kiwior; Partey, Rice, Havertz; Saka, Trossard, Sterling.

    Southampton team news

Given Martin's comments post-Bournemouth defeat, we should expect changes to the Saints' starting XI on Saturday.

Cameron Archer, Ben Brereton Diaz, Kyle Walker-Peters, and Adam Lallana are among the contenders to come into the team at the Emirates.

Will Smallbone is closing in on a return and could make the matchday squad, but Martin is still without Gavin Bazunu, Juan Larios, and Kamaldeen Sulemana.

Aaron Ramsdale will start against his former club at his old stomping ground.

Predicted Southampton lineup vs Arsenal: Ramsdale; Suguwara, Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Walker-Peters; Downes, Ugochukwu; Dibling, Lallana, Diaz; Archer.

    Arsenal vs Southampton Score Prediction

Arsenal had no business being locked at 2-2 heading into stoppage time last weekend, and Arteta will be keen to oversee a drama-free home outing on Saturday.

While Martin will want to see a response from his team after they were cast aside by Bournemouth on Monday, doing so at the Emirates is beyond this Southampton team. The Saints boss has shown to be adaptable and somewhat pragmatic, so I don't think the visitors are going to come here and take on this Arsenal press.

Still, it's going to take a Mads Hermansen-like performance from Ramsdale to keep them in this game, and I just don't see that happening. Arsenal should win at a canter.

    Prediction: Arsenal 3-0 Southampton
