Fabio Vieira is playing away from Arsenal, at least for this season. The Portugal international has returned to his home country, joining Porto on loan throughout the summer.

Given Arsenal's track record of sending players out on loan, it's easy to assume that Fabio Vieira is not in contention for a place in the Arsenal squad long-term.

After all, he struggled for game time before being sent out on loan, so surely this will only continue with a year away from the squad, right?

Wrong. Actually, Fabio Vieira is still in contention for a place in the Arsenal squad long-term.

On that note, Arsenal fans will be interested to hear Fabrizio Romano's recent comments, involving the loaned-out Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira.

Fabrizio Romano has superb update on Fabio Vieira’s Arsenal career

According to Fabrizio Romano, myths surrounding Fabio Vieira's Arsenal future are false. Arsenal do not yet know the future of Fabio Vieira and they will monitor his situation, before deciding his place in the squad, after his loan spell.

As per Romano, this is the reason why Arsenal wanted a straight loan, rather than including any option or obligation for Porto to buy. This leaves the power in Arsenal's hands and should they wish to keep Vieira after his loan, they will.

In his own words, via the Here We Go podcast, Romano said: “After [Vieira] joined Porto on loan from Arsenal, many people starting saying ‘okay, it’s over for Fabio Vieira at Arsenal’. What I’m told is that this is not the case. Arsenal only wanted to do a straight loan with no buy option included, because they want to assess the situation of Fabio Vieira again in one year."

Fabio Vieira is difficult to assess. This is because Arsenal fans simply have to factor in his potential but at this point in time, that potential is untapped.

Yes, Vieira's had good moments in an Arsenal shirt. Some of those moments have come at key times, including the assist for Gabriel Martinelli in the last minute against Aston Villa and repeating the same with Gabriel Jesus against Man United.

However, Vieira has his downfalls. He is not physically strong so he can easily be pushed off the ball. His work-rate can often be criticised too, in the same manner as Mesut Ozil.

That said, a positive loan spell in Portugal could do Vieira the world of good. Let's hope, eh?
