Arsenal won't have the luxury of securing Joan Garcia on the cheap should they opt to pursue the Espanyol goalkeeper as Aaron Ramsdale's replacement.

Ramsdale is still expected to leave the club before the end of the summer window having been usurped by David Raya as the club's number one.

Movement regarding his transfer has so far been minimal, although Ajax do boast an interest. However, their loan proposal to bring Ramsdale to Amsterdam for the 2024/25 campaign has understandably been rejected by the Gunners with gaining very little from such a deal.

It remains to be seen whether Ajax will return with another offer, but Arsenal are seemingly expectant. The Gunners have already identified their replacement for the Englishman, but they will have to pay market value to sign him.

Arsenal's interest in Espanyol's Garcia was noted earlier in the window, and that interest supposedly remains with less than three weeks remaining before the transfer deadline.

However, the Gunners have release clause issues to consider.

The Standard's Simon Collings reports that Garcia currently has a release clause worth £21.4m with the Spanish club, but this figure is set to increase to £25.7m as early as Thursday. There are also suggestions that the clause will rise to £30m should the goalkeeper make his senior debut for Spain.

The 23-year-old was a part of Spain's gold medal-winning squad at the Paris Olympics, and the dearth of top-level Spanish goalkeepers mean a senior call-up may not be far away for Garcia, who enjoyed a swift rise at Espanyol last season.

Stylistically, it's easy to understand why Arsenal are keen on Garcia. A towering shot-stopper with cat-like reflexes and a distinct comfort in possession, Garcia would be an excellent deputy to David Raya.

However, splurging upwards of £20m on a reserve goalkeeper given the club's needs at other positions is hardly ideal. Perhaps Espanyol would be willing to sanction an initial loan? Could Wojciech Szczesny be an option following his Juventus release?
