Paris Saint-Germain against Arsenal has become a rivalry recently, as they met three times in the Champions League last season. Their first two meetings between the two sides in the competition, which came in the 2016/17 season, ended in draws. The Gunners then won a group stage match last season, before being knocked out by PSG across two legs in the semi-finals.

You cannot look much into the two draws during the 2016/17 season. However, the three matches in the last campaign are significant as both squads are much the same this season. We will review these games to get an insight into how the final might unfold. We are looking into the last five competitive meetings between the two sides, so we are not taking into account pre-season matches.

PSG are undefeated at home with one win and one draw. Whilst the Gunners have won, drawn, and lost at home. The aggregate score across these five matches would be 6-6. Arsene Wenger was Arsenal boss for the first two meetings, but Mikel Arteta has been in charge for the other three. Unai Emery was in charge of PSG when they met in both group stage matches back in 2016. Luis Enrique has been their manager in the other three matchups.

Arsenal’s win and strongest performances against PSG

Arsenal's 2-0 win over PSG in the group stage of last season's Champions League was a dominant display. Arteta's side made use of their home advantage at the Emirates Stadium. Kai Havertz got the Gunners underway with a header from Leandro Trossard's cross. Bukayo Saka then added the other before half-time, which was to be enough to see off the French side.

The Gunners' 1-1 draw with PSG away from home during the 2016/17 season was seen as a very resilient performance. Edinson Cavani gave the Ligue 1 side the lead in the first minute. David Ospina then kept Arsenal in the game with some great saves before Alexis Sánchez got the equalizer. Tempers flared at the end, with both Olivier Giroud and Marco Verratti being sent off.

PSG’s best results against Arsenal

PSG's victories in each leg of the semi-finals in the last campaign were their best results against the Gunners. They won the first leg 1-0 thanks to a left-footed strike from Ousmane Dembélé, who would go on to win the Ballon d'Or last year. PSG's counterattacking style, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia being particularly effective, was key to their victory.

The French side then claimed a 2-1 win in the second leg. Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi scored both of PSG's goals. Saka got one back for Arsenal, but it would prove to be just a consolation. Enrique's side then beat Inter Milan 5-0 in the final.

Key trends from the last five PSG vs Arsenal matches

  • Average 2.4 goals
  • Two own-goals
  • Each side has managed just one clean sheet

These matches tend to be high-scoring, entertaining affairs. PSG rely on their free-flowing attackers under Enrique, whilst Arteta's Gunners are effective from set-pieces.

Players who made the biggest impact in recent PSG vs Arsenal meetings

Dembélé was the most effective in both semi-finals last season, with a goal and an assist across both ties. Saka and Cavani are the top goal scorers in their five meetings, with two each.

Ruiz and Vitinha were two key midfielders for the PSG side last season as they beat the Gunners before winning the tournament. Ospina was excellent for the Gunners as they drew 1-1 during the 2016/17 season, but he is no longer with the club. Guanluigi Donnarumma was also fantastic for PSG against the Gunners last season, but he is now Manchester City's keeper.

What the recent results mean ahead of the Champions League final

PSG may have defeated the Gunners in the semi-finals last season. However, Arsenal are a stronger side than they were then. They have since won the Premier League and finally have a top striker in Viktor Gyökeres.

The French side may have a psychological advantage as they beat Arsenal along the way to winning the tournament last season. PSG also won their domestic division this season, but this is routine for them. The Gunners finally won the Premier League for the first time since the 2003/04 season, so they go into this game on a real high.
