According to fresh reports, Arsenal have made an approach to sign Jeremy Jacquet from Ligue 1 club, Rennes. Jacquet is a hot prospect for the future but the French club may be reluctant to sell.
It’s no secret that Mikel Arteta is still continuing to build amid squad depth concerns despite a busy summer of transfers within Mikel Arteta’s evolving squad. The latest name to emerge is that of 18-year-old Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners have already made an approach for the young Frenchman, eyeing him as a possible replacement option should either Oleksandr Zinchenko or Jakub Kiwior leave the club.
Jeremy Jacquet could be a signing for the long term
While Arsenal’s interest is very real, any potential move for Jacquet appears to be one for the long term. Rennes, who just extended the teenager’s contract back in May, are adamant that the player is not for sale this summer.
The French club consider Jacquet an important player for the future and have no intention of considering bids, especially from outside of France, this early in his development.
What stands out here is the club’s patience. Rather than forcing a deal in a difficult market, Arsenal appear willing to wait. This is perhaps a reflection on the quality in depth that Arsenal have in that position already and the limited transfer interest in Jakub Kiwior at this stage.
Early signs for new signing, Christhian Mosquera, are good. His brief performance alongside William Saliba in the pre-season defeat to Tottenham was very encouraging. Not only that, Gabriel is due back in action soon which will add quality and depth in an area which has caused concern in recent times.
Should Kiwior leave during this window, Andrea Berta may need to work his magic once again in this summer transfer market. After all the money that has been spent in other areas of the pitch, Arteta will be aware that his defence requires further fortification.
Arsenal could wait until 2026 to bid for Jacquet
Rennes' firm stance doesn't rule out a move in future windows. In fact, Arsenal have reportedly earmarked 2026 as a more realistic time to strike, should Jacquet continue on his upward trajectory. By then, the squad could look quite different and Jacquet might be ready for a bigger stage.
For now, this is a name to keep an eye on how Jacquet develops this season. The links may be low-key, but Arsenal’s track record in scouting young talent is getting harder to ignore. And if Jeremy Jacquet is indeed part of the plan, the groundwork is already being laid for a smart and strategic addition down the line.
