Arsenal managed to return from the international break with a win, as they beat Leeds United 2-1 at the Emirates. Daniel Farke's side took the lead after 55 minutes before Riccardo Calafiori and Bruno Guimaraes scored to hand Arsenal the victory.
Mikel Arteta's side needed the three points as they lost their last game before the break against Brighton and were already three points behind rivals Manchester City. Despite the Gunners' heroics, City remain top of the league, as they dismantled Liverpool at Anfield in what was a hostile atmosphere on Sunday afternoon, given the controversy surrounding Enzo Maresca's side at the moment.
As things stand, Arsenal are second and three points behind City, although there is an argument to be made that a giant asterisk should be there, with fans having no idea what will happen to Man City amid their appeal of the financial rule breaches.
Arsenal predicted to miss out on consecutive PL titles
After the Leeds win, Arsenal will be feeling good about their chances this season, but the latest Opta supercomputer simulation predicts that the Gunners will miss out on winning consecutive league titles to rivals Man City (pending any action on the breaches).
The supercomputer predicts that Arsenal have a 40.61% chance of winning the league this season, behind Man City, who have a 48.63% chance. It predicts that the final table will see Arsenal on 77 points and their rivals on 78, low tallies considering the starts that both teams have had.
It's so hard to speculate on the title race this season, knowing that we're not likely to hear anything about what will (or won't) happen to City before the start of next year, but assuming everything stays the same, we're in for yet another tight battle between the two sides.
Could Brighton be Arsenal's biggest title challengers?
Perhaps more intriuigingly is the odds to qualify for the Champions League, with the supercomputer predicting that Brighton finish third on 63 points, Liverpool fourth on 59 points and Chelsea fifth on 57 points.
In a world in which Man City get docked several points, and are eliminated from the title race, it would seem, according to the supercomputer that Brighton would be the Gunners' biggest rivals rather than Chelsea or Liverpool.
The Seagulls have a 4.88% chance of winning the league title, compared to the Reds' 2.13% and Chelsea's 1.01%. They could end up being the closest thing we've had to a 2015/16 Leicester City repeat, although the simulation does still have them over 10 points behind the Gunners in the final league table.
