It is easy to forget that Arsenal spent six seasons out of the Champions League. Even before that, towards the end of Arsène Wenger's tenure, the Gunners never made any impact on the competition, eliminated in the round of 16 in seven successive seasons, often times heavily.
Well, since returning to Europe's premier club competition under Mikel Arteta, that has all changed. The Gunners have gone quarter-finals, semi-final and then beaten finalists, with fans everywhere hoping that trend continues, culminating in glory at the Metropolitano on 5 June.
Since the introduction of the league phase, Arsenal have finished third and then first, winning all eight matches last season, something no one else has ever achieved. This was a key factor in their run to last year's final in Budapest, securing a home second leg in every knockout round.
Having already beaten Napoli 1-0 at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, Martin Ødegaard thwacking in via the post, they will be targeting similar again. So, ahead of LOSC Lille's visit to North London on Tuesday, can Arsenal continue their flawless home Champions League record at this stage of the competition?
Arsenal's Champions League group stage/league phase home results (2023-present)
- 2023/24:
- 4-0 vs PSV Eindhoven, 2-0 vs Sevilla and 6-0 vs Lens.
- 2024/25:
- 2-0 vs Paris Saint-Germain, 1-0 vs Shakhtar Donetsk, 3-0 vs Monaco and 3-0 vs GNK Dinamo Zagreb.
- 2025/26:
- 2-0 vs Olympiacos, 4-0 vs Atlético Madrid, 3-1 vs Bayern Munich and 3-2 vs Kairat.
Under Mikel Arteta, Arsenal have won all 11 Champions League group stage or league phase home matches. Across these wins, the Gunners have scored 33 goals and conceded only three. Teenager Lennart Karl equalised for Bayern Munich last November, before Jorginho and Ricardinho were on target for Kairat, when the Kazakh champions made the 3,400 mile journey to England.
Thus, Kairat have scored more goals than Arsenal's other ten visitors combined. This season, the Gunners league phase fixtures are certainly tougher than they were last time round. Next mid-week, Arteta's team will take on Bayern Munich in Bavaria, with trips to Slavia Prague and Real Betis on the agenda too.
At home meantime, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid will be their next two visitors, concluding the campaign with a visit from Azerbaijani champions Sabah. Thus, if Arsenal want to finish in the upper echelons of the gigantic table which, as they proved last season, is important, home form will continue to be key, starting when les Dogues come to North London on Tuesday.
