Ben White is currently with England, as they prepare for their international break double-header against Uruguay and Japan. It is the last international break of the domestic season, and already, Thomas Tuchel has heaped huge praise on Ben White.
The new England boss has complimented Ben White's professionalism and desire to play for England, something that he never had under Gareth Southgate. Tuchel reaffirmed that he had no interest in past relationships, and when he gave Ben White the call, there was an immediate emotional reaction of 'yes, I want to play.'
In his own words, Thomas Tuchel said "Once I asked Ben if he would be ready to play for me and for England, he straightaway, without hesitation, said he would love to come back and was desperate to come back."
"[When he got the call after Quansah's injury] The reaction came within seconds. It was very euphoric, very positive and very emotional about it. That showed me he really means it. The way he behaves and the way he has trained here in camp has been exceptional, very, very good. It shows his quality."
Thomas Tuchel made a Ben White realisation that Gareth Southgate never made
Arsenal fans needed no reminding of Ben White's professionalism and quality. He has given his all to Arsenal and he's even been through positional changes, injuries, and recently replacement in the starting XI. Even throughout that adversity, White never acted bigger than the club, and he put his head down and got on with it.
That is the exact reason why White deserved a call-up to the international team, even given his history with the former manager. Southgate is no longer around, and now, Tuchel is responsible for building a great relationship with White; by the sounds of it, he's already got a headstart there.
Naturally, there will be England fans who are opposed to Ben White being in the team. It's a nation of passionate fans, but it's also a nation of irritated fans. England hasn't won anything major in a lot of people's lifetimes; therefore, the standards have never been higher.
Playing for England was once perceived as the highest honour for any player. Ben White challenged that status quo, and that didn't go well with England fans. However, the past is the past, and as Tuchel said, every player deserves a second chance.
