This season has been nearly perfect for Arsenal... nearly. While there are still three games to be played, if they win all three, they will win a Champions League and Premier League double, firmly cementing this as the best Arsenal season ever.
The only thing that would have made that better is if, well, Tottenham were relegated. There is still a chance, but it's a very slim chance.
Nevertheless, despite Tottenham being absolutely horrific to watch this season, they have surprisingly helped Arsenal get in the position they are in.
Tottenham did help Arsenal this season after all
Arsenal have collected six points against Tottenham this season, winning both of their games. Man City, on the other hand, only picked up one point against Tottenham. This five-point swing is the joint biggest swing between the two sides this season.
Similarly, Arsenal won twice against Brighton to pick up six points, whereas Man City only picked up one point against the Seagulls, lending a +5 swing in Arsenal's favour.
Never would anyone think that the two teams who may have helped Arsenal the most this season would be Tottenham and a team coached by Fabian HĂĽrzeler, but stranger things have happened.
Opponent | Points gained by Arsenal | Points gained by Man City | Point swing in Arsenal's perspective |
|---|---|---|---|
Tottenham | +6 | +1 | 🔼+5 |
Brighton | +6 | +1 | 🔼+5 |
Liverpool | +1 | +6 | đź”˝-5 |
Arsenal's bogey team, on the other hand, has been Liverpool. Hopefully, those performances against the Reds don't bite the Gunners in the backside, but we can all remember how uncomfortable those performances were to watch.
Tottenham avoiding relegation is actually good for Arsenal
Tottenham probably won't get relegated this season. However, they did themselves no favours by drawing against Leeds. There is still plenty to play for at the bottom of the table, just as there is at the top.
As glorious as any Arsenal fan would find Tottenham getting relegated, it would be equally as beneficial for the Gunners to keep them up. Not only is it a better shot at six points next season (West Ham clearly gave Arsenal a tougher fight than Tottenham did), but the rivalry brings a lot of revenue to Arsenal twice per season. To lose the easy points and revenue would be a blow.
Man City play against Crystal Palace in the Premier League tonight. There will be a lot of eyes on that game, or at least the result of that game, and most of them will be wearing Arsenal's red.
As fun as the idea of Tottenham's relegation is to entertainment, missing the North London Derby would be a blow in reality.
