If Arsenal are going to end this season with the Premier League title, and perhaps other trophies to show for their efforts too, then Viktor Gyökeres is going to be key. The Swedish international's performances have been much maligned, but he is now the Gunners' top scorer this season with 15 goals across all competitions, following his recent double during the demolition North London derby.
Considering Gyökeres scored 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting CP, thereby awarded the Gerd Müller Trophy back in September, Gooners believed they were signing a clinical centre-forward. Well, for the most part, many have been underwhelmed by the 27-year-old's performances, but do the stats tell a different story?
Premier League players highest conversion % 2025/26
Players | Shots | Goals | Conversion % |
|---|---|---|---|
João Pedro | 52 | 11 | 21.2% |
Antoine Semenyo | 64 | 14 | 21% |
Erling Haaland | 96 | 22 | 20.7% |
Viktor Gyökeres | 42 | 10 | 20% |
Igor Thiago | 67 | 18 | 20% |
Note: Only players with 40+ shots included. Stats via Statmuse & are correct at time of publication.
Of every player in the Premier League who has attempted 40 or more shots this season, only five have a conversion rate of 20% or better. Gyökeres has scored two spot-kicks thus far, emphatically converting against Leeds and Everton, while his eight non-penalty goals have required just 40 shots, a conversion rate of 20%. Only João Pedro, Antoine Semenyo and Erling Haaland rank higher, and it is very marginal.
It is clear that, even though he contributes very little in build-up player, give Gyökeres a chance and he will regularly take it. Well, right now, with Kai Havertz struggling for fitness and Gabriel Jesus having shown very little in recent weeks, he is likely to be the first-choice centre-forward ahead of a sequence of key fixtures.
Arsenal's next 6 fixtures
- Wednesday 4 March. Brighton & Hove Albion (A). Premier League. Kick off 7:30pm.
- Saturday 7 March. Mansfield Town (A). FA Cup fifth round. Kick off 12:15pm.
- Wednesday 11 March. Bayer Leverkusen (A). Champions League last 16. Kick off 5:45pm.
- Saturday 14 March. Everton (H). Premier League. Kick off 5:30pm.
- Tuesday 17 March. Bayer Leverkusen (H). Champions League last 16. Kick off 8pm.
- Sunday 22 March. Manchester City (N). EFL Cup Final. Kick off 4:30pm.
The next three weeks are likely to be season-defining for Mikel Arteta's side facing six fixtures in four different competitions. Premier League matches against Brighton and Everton are must win, as they seek to maintain their slender lead at the top, while Mansfield and Bayer Leverkusen need to be taken care of to progress through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and Champions League respectively.
This month culminates with the Carabao Cup Final, the club's first final for six years, seeking both silverware and a psychological edge over Manchester City at Wembley. With one big games after another after another, Gyökeres really needs to find his top form to fire Arsenal to a run of victories.
