Vinicius Junior's comments on Bruno Guimaraes will hurt Arsenal fans

Arsenal's summer 2026 transfer window will ultimately be remembered as the tale of two Brazilians.

The Gunners set out to land two of the most influential players in the Selecao to complement their existing title-winning team. Both were extremely ambitious moves which would require lengthy negotiations and signficant finances.

After weeks of toying with Newcastle United, Arsenal completed a deal for Bruno Guimaraes. The midfielder arrived for £75 million, giving Mikel Arteta an embarrassment of riches in the middle of the park.

They weren't successful in the pursuit of their other South American target. Vinicius Junior put pen to paper on a new contract at Real Madrid, turning down advances from the Premier League champions to commit his future to Los Blancos.

This was a damaging blow for the Gunners, who had been eyeing a superstar attacker to elevate their offensive cohort. They've subsequently settled on Christos Tzolis on the left-hand side — a decision that may ultimately come back to bite them.

The trauma of this transfer failure might just have resurfaced after Vinicius and Guimaraes played together for Brazil against Australia on Tuesday.

Arsenal have 16 players away on international duty at the moment. Among them are Guimaraes and Gabriel Magalhaes, who are currently down under with Carlo Ancelotti's squad.

CONMEBOL has no Nations League, so the South American teams are currently in a dead period of their fixture schedule, playing meaningless friendlies around the world for commercial reasons. Brazil arranged two separate friendlies against the Socceroos for this break, the first of which was played on Friday in Queensland and ended 1-1.

The second was in Brisbane on Tuesday, with this clash ending 4-2 to Ancelotti's outfit. Both Guimaraes and Gabriel started, with the former getting on the scoresheet by tapping home from close range following neat work from Vinicius and Endrick.

Brazil were awarded a late penalty to add their fourth goal of the night, and Guimaraes gave up the responsibility to Vinicius.

"Bruno Guimarães is our penalty taker when Raphinha isn’t playing, and I thought he’d want to take it, but he knows that I need a bit of confidence right now, in this moment," Vinicius explained to Brazilian media after the game.

The emotionally intelligent gesture from Guimaraes not only displays the new Arsenal signing's leadership and character, but also highlights the relationship the two players already have. The 28-year-old almost certainly wouldn't have given up the chance to score a second goal in the game if he didn't recognise Vinicius' recent struggles and didn't hold affection for the Real Madrid man.

Vinicius has recieved harsh criticism from sections of the Bernabeu faithful so far this season, having scored just once in his first eight appearances for Jose Mourinho's team this term. This criticism has clearly taken its toll on the winger's confidence, and he needed a senior player to acknowledge this and boost his morale with a gesture like giving up a spot-kick.

However, this bond between the two players will only hurt on-watching Arsenal fans, with this reminding them of what could've been at the Emirates. In North London, Vinicius would've recieved the love and admiration that he doesn't get at Real Madrid, and he'd have been sharing a pitch with a player who understands him and plays to his strengths.

It's not outlandish to suggest that Vinicius himself might be regretting the decision he made back in August.
