Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk called Arsenal right-back Jurrien Timber the best Dutch player in the Premier League of the last season.
Van Dijk and his Liverpool side has had a really tough season, after the league win in the 2024-25 season. They came fifth this season, off the back of some very uninspiring football.
The money they spent over the last summer meant Liverpool fans were excited about the prospect of winning the league again, but things did not work out for them.
For Arsenal, though, they did - and Jurrien Timber was a key player in making that happen. Timber was part of an astute Arsenal defense that let the least amount of goals in last season, and has improved tremendously.
Virgil van Dijk confirmed what every Arsenal fan already knew about Jurrien Timber
Timber was brilliant defensively, and was always easily able to lock up the best left-wingers in the league on a very consistent basis.
Not just that, his partnership with Bukayo Saka has been brilliant, with the pair constantly linking up to create danger from the right side.
Van Dijk was asked who the best Dutch player in the Premier League is, to which he simply said Timber's name.
He himself plays with a bunch of Dutch players at Liverpool - Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo have been playing with Van Dijk at Liverpool for a few years now, with Jeremie Frimpong joining this season.
Saying Timber's name despite having three Liverpool teammates playing in the Dutch National Team goes to show how fair Van Dijk is. Fair play to him. Many of the players would have said one of their own teammate, even if they had a bad season.
Van Dijk obviously considers Arsenal as title rivals every season, so for him to say that, when he clearly is one of the best in the business himself, shows his maturity.
It also shows Timber's quality. Timber has been on another level this past year, and it is good that more and more people have started appreciating just how good he is.
The biggest reason why Van Dijk is saying Timber is probably much simpler than people like me would try to say. Liverpool had a bad season, Arsenal had a good season. Timber had a good individual season, that is all that matters.
However, to actually recognise and say it is another thing, and it feels nice to have people look beyond rivalries and give someone their flowers.
