For the first time since 2021, an Arsenal senior team is on the hunt for a new manager.
There was big - but hardly unexpected - news out of north London on Tuesday morning as the club confirmed the resignation of Jonas Eidevall as manager of the women's team. The Gunners' announcement arrived following a slow start to the 2024/25 season, with Eidevall overseeing defeats to Bayern Munich and Chelsea over the past week.
The Swede's former assistant, Renée Slegers, has been put in interim charge and she will be in the home dugout on Wednesday night as Arsenal continue their WUCL campaign against Norwegian side Valerenga on Matchday 2 of the group stage.
Slegers, who represented the Netherlands 55 times, joined Eidevall's staff in 2023 but does have senior managerial experience with Limhamn Bunkeflo and FC Rosengard despite being only 35. She'll have a chance over the coming week or so to showcase her potential as Eidevall's successor, but Edu Gaspar and company are said to already be on the hunt for an external replacement.
Who could replace Jonas Eidevall as Arsenal Women manager?
While many are content with Eidevall's departure, the Swede's reign in north London will generally be remembered fondly. He departs with an impressive 66.67% win rate from 120 games, and although he failed to lift the Women's Super League title during his three-and-a-half-year stint, Eidevall guided Arsenal to two League Cup successes.
The Gunners will now be aiming to appoint a manager capable of thrusting the club into the conversation alongside the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City at the top of the WSL.
Assuming Slegers doesn't assume the position permanently, former Gunner Casey Stoney feels like an obvious choice to succeed Eidevall. Stoney, who enjoyed two spells at Arsenal as a player, is currently on the market having been sacked by the San Diego Wave in the summer. The long-time England international earned great acclaim for her work as Manchester United boss following their foundation, helping them into the WSL before leading them to back-to-back fourth-place finishes.
She's the early bookie's favourite, although there are conflicting reports as to whether Arsenal will target their former defender. Phil Neville (no thanks), Ashley Cole (as if), and Jack Wilshere (intriguing, but unlikely) are other names listed by bookmakers as potential candidates.
