England take on Ghana in their second match of this summer's World Cup at Gillette Stadium on Tuesday afternoon local time and 9pm in the UK. These two nations have only ever met once before, a 1-1 friendly draw at Wembley in 2011; Andy Carroll and Asamoah Gyan the scorers back then.

Fair to say, this World Cup clash in Massachusetts is significantly more important. Three Lions won their Group L opener, beating Croatia 4-2 in Texas, while Ghana beat Panama 1-0 later that day. An hour and a half ahead of kick off in Foxborough, Thomas Tuchel named this starting lineup for the clash with the Black Stars.

England's confirmed starting lineup vs Ghana

  • Jordan Pickford.
  • Reece James, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guéhi & Djed Spence.
  • Elliot Anderson & Declan Rice.
  • Noni Madueke, Jude Bellingham & Anthony Gordon.
  • Harry Kane.

Despite admitting this week he has been nursing a neural pain in his hamstring for six months, forcing him to come off in the 72nd minute on Wednesday, Declan Rice keeps his place at the base of midfield alongside Elliot Anderson. The other Arsenal interest comes on the right-flank where, as was the case against Croatia six days ago, Noni Madueke starts, chosen over Bukayo Saka. So, why is this?

Well, the Gunners' star boy continues to manage an Achilles tendinitis issue that forced him to sit out five matches in early-April, following the EFL Cup Final. This had seen him restricted to individual work while training with England, ever since he joined up with the camp following the Champions League Final in Budapest. As of Sunday though, he is now taking part in full training.

That all said, Saka has been fit enough to see cameos off the bench against both Costa Rica in a friendly in Florida, as well as the World Cup opener against Croatia, enjoying 27 and 18 minutes of action. In the latter, he showcased his quality straight away, setting up Marcus Rashford for England's fourth. This was the occasion of Saka's 50th England cap, starting three times at Euro 2020, four times in Qatar and then all seven matches at the most-recent Euros in Germany.

The Arsenal winger now has 14 goals and ten assists to his name in England colours, and is clearly one of Tuchel's first names on the team sheet, when at 100%. For now, as was the case at club level last season, Madueke is a more than serviceable deputy, registering two key passes, creating one big chance and racking up nine carries in Arlington. Thus, with England planning to be in North America for a little while longer, expect Tuchel to carefully manage Saka's minutes, with Madueke keeping his place in the starting lineup for now.
