Why Thomas Partey isn’t in the Arsenal lineup vs PSG tonight

Thomas Partey will miss Arsenal vs PSG in the Champions League tonight due to a suspension he sustained in the 2nd leg against Real Madrid.

The suspension was a result of a series of yellow cards, and unfortunately, he picked up the maximum amount against Real Madrid. Partey will be serve his suspension against PSG in the 1st leg, but become available for selection again in the 2nd leg.

When fans saw Thomas Partey pick up the yellow card in the game against Real Madrid, they were flabbergasted, to say the least. It was like Partey forgot about the hardwork Arsenal had put in throughout the quarterfinal, making himself unavailable for the semifinal 1st leg.

In our live blog of the game, we described the booking as "a moment where he lost his head, and now has an unnecessary suspension to serve."

Thomas Partey not in the Arsenal lineup vs PSG could have been avoided

Partey saw red (metaphorically, not literally, thankfully) and was rightfully shown the yellow card. The referee's decision could be understood, but it was a lack of discipline that Partey should have avoided. Now, Arsenal must make do with this momentary lapse in concentration.

Thankfully for the Gunners, there are options for Mikel Arteta to tinker with. Part of the Spaniard's philosophy is his eye for versatile players in the transfer window, which works for the Gunners during times they must improvise.

We predicted Declan Rice to drop deeper to cover Thomas Partey, in a position which is not uncommon to the England international. It does mean that Rice won't shine as much in the final third as he did against Real Madrid, but at least the defence will remain covered.

However, Arsenal fans must not expect to see Thomas Partey in the Arsenal lineup tonight. He is not available for selection entirely, so he won't even be involved in the bench. Still, this should (touch wood, given Arsenal's luck) render him fit and available for the 2nd leg, at least.
