Following Manchester City's 2-1 win over Arsenal in the Premier League yesterday, Erling Haaland has made a reference to his notable "stay humble" quote to Mikel Arteta from last season.
During the 2024/25 campaign, Haaland surprisingly told Arteta to "stay humble" following a 2-2 draw between Arsenal and Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Haaland had opened the scoring that day before goals from Riccardo Callafiori, and Gabriel gave the Gunners the lead. Unfortunately for Arsenal fans, John Stones then got a late equalizer.
Haaland also threw the ball at the back of Gabriel's head following Stones' goal. When Arsenal beat City 5-1 in the FA Cup that same season, Myles Lewis-Skelly mimicked Haaland's meditating celebration after scoring.
The Norwegian has become the wind-up merchant in matches between City and Arsenal. However, credit must be given to him for not going down holding his face after a clash in the game yesterday, where Gabriel appeared to push his head into Haaland's.
Erling Haaland has become the player Arsenal fans love to hate
It looked like Arsenal were to claim an important point in the title race at the weekend after Kai Havertz quickly equalized after Rayan Cherki had given City the lead. However, Haaland scored the winner in the 65th minute. Pep Guardiola's side is now just three points behind Arsenal and has a game in hand. It looks like City could pip the Gunners to the post once again.
This mid-week City play Burnley, where they could go top of the Premier League. Haaland looked ahead to that game, saying, "Every game is a final. On Wednesday, we have a new final. When we have stopped speaking here, it's about recovering for the Burnley game. Because the Burnley game is just as important as this game. We need to stay focused, stay humble."
The stay humble mention is a clear reference to what he said to Arteta last season. It had looked back then that it would be another battle between City and Arsenal for the title. However, Liverpool ended up winning it. The Gunners came second again after losing out on the title to City in the two previous campaigns.
It would be devastating for Arteta and Arsenal if they were to come second in the Premier League again. The Gunners were in such a promising position when they were nine points clear last month. However, questions will be asked about Arteta's future at Arsenal if they end up losing out on the title again.
