Michael Oliver just loves a red card against Arsenal, but his dismissal of Myles Lewis-Skelly two minutes before the break at Molineux stretched the boundaries of belief to breaking point. Wolves struggled to make the most of having a man advantage, but the Gunners were still able to take all three points thanks to substitute Riccardo Calafiori.

Bemoaning incompetent refereeing has too often been a convenient way to deflect from Arsenal's mediocre performances this season, but this time feels different. Oliver showing a straight red for Lewis-Skelly's admittedly cynical trip of wing-back Matt Doherty, caught everybody by surprise.

The professional foul to stop a break surely merited a booking, but nothing more. Yet it turns out Oliver went a step further in response to what he perceived as "serious foul play," according to the Premier League Match Centre.

Several angles of the challenge don't exactly support this case. Ultimately, there was nothing Arsenal could do about Oliver's card-happy antics except to rally together as a unit and defiantly earn a result anyway.

The visitors' chances were boosted 20 minutes from time when Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes was shown a second yellow card. Arsenal took full advantage when Calafiori hooked in a tidy finish after fine work from Gabriel Martinelli.

Here are the player ratings from a frustrating, but ultimately richly satisfying 1-0 win.

Goalkeepers & Defenders

David Raya (GK) - 8/10 - Raya wasn't exactly put through his paces by the home team playing with an extra man, but the Spanish stopper still stood tall when needed. He denied Hwang Hee-Chan in a one-on-one situation three minutes before the hour mark, before an even more impressive save thwarted Rayan Aït-Nouri seven minutes from time.

Jurrien Timber (RB) - 7/10 - Wolves were wisely trying to stretch the pitch horizontally even before Lewis-Skelly was dismissed, but the hosts were naturally more committed to exploiting the flanks against 10 men. It meant Jurrien Timber often found himself isolated against Aït-Nouri, but fortunately, Arsenal's right-back handled the responsibility well, staying strong in the duels and drawing the foul that led to Gomes' second booking.

William Saliba (CB) - 8/10 - He needed a positive game, and William Saliba chose adverse conditions to regain his composure after returning from a hamstring injury. Most often dragged out to battle rumoured Arsenal transfer target Matheus Cunha, Saliba used strength and timing to leave the skillful but volatile frontman frustrated.

Gabriel Magalhaes (CB) - 8/10 - It didn't hurt that Saliba, his central defensive partner, was also on form. Gabriel Magalhaes was spitting fire after Oliver had his moment in the spotlight, and the Brazilian's vocal leadership kept Arsenal focused long enough to go in front and resolute enough to protect the lead.

Myles Lewis-Skelly (LB) - 5/10 - The rating and his performance are all about the red card for Lewis-Skelly. Serious foul play they said. You decide.
