Joel Campbell Looks To Be Leaving In January

Some time ago we here at Pain in the Arsenal wrote an article discussing whether Joel Campbell would ever get the playing time he deserved in an Arsenal shirt. We then wrote another article, roughly a month later, asking why is still hadn’t happened when we could use someone with experience on the left wing to be playing at the moment rather than continually playing people out of position.

Well it seems Campbell will not be given time in an Arsenal shirt this year, after more rumours that he is being eyed up by big clubs in Italy and Turkey. Whether Wenger will be willing to let him go in January is another question, with his stance on having so little cover for so much of the time coming under harsh scrutiny from both media and fans.

Reports from soccerlens show that there are quite a few clubs interested in the attacking player:

"Reports this morning from Italian Media Outlet Tuttosport claim that Inter Milan will make a move for the 22 year old in the upcoming January transfer window. The Nerazzurri however have decided that they ask for a loan deal till the end of the season with an option to buy. Such a move would suit both parties, the club who can finally get rid of his wages and the player himself can get regular game time rather than warming the sidelines. We had earlier reported that AC Milan were also interested in Campbell in the summer while Portuguese side Benfica were also looking to seek a loan deal. All such reports hint towards an exit from North London, but where would the player’s next destination be"

Arsenal need to work out what is best for their squad and maybe a loan for the rest of the season would help everyone involved, but completely losing hold of Campbell after waiting so long for him would be a mistake in my eyes.

Despite holding onto a lot of attacking players simply removing players from the squad at a time like this may not be the best course of action, especially when you look at Chelsea’s huge loan based squad that allows them a lot of versatility going forward into the next few seasons.

Campbell has a lot of potential and he is a decent player that has proven experience at international level so just selling him on without a go in the first team would be rash, especially when it seems Wenger was happy to play Ozil on the left wing instead which caused us to play with no width at all.

In other transfer rumours Ron Vlaar was also in some of the papers today, with his agent being quoted as saying that he didn’t want to react to any rumours in particular, but that he was very ambitious regarding his career and a move to a top club was part of his plan.

So, Campbell out and Ron Vlaar in during the January window? What do you guys make of that?
