9. Robert Pires

The chicken legged Frenchman was a terror for opposition fullbacks. His unusual running style brought ridicule from the media, but his play on the field received accolades of the highest honor from fans and pundits alike. Robert Pires was signed in a £6 million deal from FC Metz. His task was not an enviable one, replacing £25 million departure Marc Overmars. Many questioned his fragility in adapting to English football, and although he took the time to settle into the fast-paced, high-intensity English game, Pires flashed quality in his first year.

Pires’ best years coincided with Arsenal’s best years in history, between 2001-2005, the French winger was truly mesmerizing, His link up with fellow Frenchman Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry, along with all round genius Dennis Bergkamp, created one of the greatest attacking teams ever seen. Under Le Proffessuer, Arsenal were sensational, and Pires was at the heart of such wonderful form.

Pires was a true genius cutting in off the left side. His right foot was magical, his pace underrated. After his first years struggles, Pires had perhaps his best year in the 01/02 season. Pires led the league in assists, scored nine goals and was the Football Writer’s Association Premiership Player of the Year. Despite missing the last couple of months of the year through injury, Pires was also named Arsenal’s Player of the Year.

Over the next couple of years, Pires went on to dominate English football, scoring 14 goals in 21 games in the next season and then 14 goals with ten assists in Arsenal’s invincible season. Winning two league titles and three FA Cups during his six years at the club, Pires was magical on the field, and it only pays testament to the quality of Arsenal players that he is only at 9th.
