Arsenal are still linked with Rachid Ghezzal and literally every sign points towards a move. But wouldn’t a move necessitate a corresponding sale?

Arsenal has been looking at a quiet January. Arsene Wenger set the standard pretty low when he came out and said that he wasn’t looking to make any moves this winter transfer window. But you know Wenger, he’s a veritable trickster.

Or not.

Anyway, Arsenal are yet again being heavily linked to someone at Lyon. Only it’s not Alexandre Lacazette or Corentin Tolisso. It’s Rachid Ghezzal, who also boasts a lengthy resume of linksto the Gunners.

The signs are stacking up that Ghezzal will be moving, whether it’s to North London or not is yet to be seen. He’s 24 years old and doesn’t always find himself in the Lyon starting XI. Which isn’t helped by the fact that Lyon just acquired Memphis Depay, another Manchester United reject.

Depay will be slotting in right ahead of Ghezzal in the pecking order. That’s usually how it works when a team drops significant money on a direct replacement who happens to be younger and touted a bit higher.

Ghezzal has one of those feel good stories of coming from nowhere and making himself a pretty decent name for himself. But that is going to fade with added, more expensive competition, not to mention the fact that Ghezzal’s contract is up at the end of this summer.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Meaning that he could be acquired for pretty cheap. As in really cheap. Nobody wants to lose a player for free, especially Lyon, who love to capitalize on young talent, turning them into cash. Ghezzal has value and they could still pull in a nice price tag for him and seeing as how Depay is here, they more than likely don’t intend to keep him.

Seeing him come to the Emirates would be a nice addition, but you have to imagine that means that someone else at the club is out. Someone like Joel Campbell or potentially even Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is finding no love lately.

The wings is one area where Arsenal doesn’t exactly have a surplus of useful talent. It depends on how you classify Alexis, but still, Iwobi feels more like a central midfielder, the Ox needs time and Walcott is always wearing on our patience. You can make an argument for Welbeck and Lucas but they are strikers, primarily.

Ghezzal would be a sprightly injection, which can make all the difference when you’re trying to win a title.
