Arsenal seem to be in the selling mode now, as they look set to send Wojciech Szczesny to Juventus. This is so incredibly counter-intuitive.

Arsenal look to be selling both of their former No. 1 keeper contenders in the span of a week, as David Ospina looks set to join Fenerbahce and Wojciech Szczesny is reported to have agreed on a move to Juventus.

While selling Ospina was unavoidable, selling Szczesny wasn’t. The Pole had just accomplished a superb season at Roma, launching himself into the peripheries for top goal keepers in the world, and even in his time at Arsenal, he had some fantastic times. Remember him winning the golden gloves?

This loan to Roma seemed to do the trick, getting him up to standards for another go at life at the Emirates. But apparently, Arsenal doesn’t think so.

This move goes against everything that I thought the club had finally figured out. If you have a player that is playing incredibly well and the only person in his way is an established veteran, you still allow him his opportunities. The club has to come before your loyalties to players.

Think of Olivier Giroud. Boy, howdy do I support the heck out of the Frenchman, and Wenger did too. But he only really reached his best when he was put to the test by other strikers. Giroud is currently in a state where he has never been better. Behold the power of competition.

Mathieu Debuchy was ingrained in the starting XI, but Hector Bellerin was given his rightful chance and guess who has a future and who doesn’t? Behold the power of competition.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Petr Cech is a veteran stopper, one of the best around. We got him to fix the enigmatic keeper corps that had plagued the squad for too long. But you have to keep the pressure on the guy. He had his moments this season where he was not good. To this day, I’d prefer to see Ospina in goal during a free kick or penalty than Cech.

To sell Szczesny is to remind Cech that he is doing just fine, and that he can just keep doing what he is doing.

There always has to be that added impetus not to slack; to constantly improve. Cech no longer has that. Szczesny could have provided that.

And, in the possible scenario that the Pole proves himself the better option, who loses out? Nobody. Maybe Cech, if he can’t recover, but the club wins the day. And isn’t that the objective?

This is a silly sale, if it goes through, a foolish waste of an opportunity that could have led to something special.
