Arsenal’s once golden boy Cesc Fabregas may be back out there, available for transfer, but this is a dangerous game to play.

Arsenal once had a bright future under the captaincy of Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard was simply a phenom, one of the single entities responsible for keeping the Gunners in Champions League contention even as they were paying off debts and selling off major players.

When Fabregas improbably became one of those players, then made the ill-fated journey to Chelsea, solidifying his position as a snake along the lines of Robin van Persie, it seemed to be all over. This man could have been an Arsenal legend but he shat all over that idea and damn near became a Chelsea one (given their lack of history and all).

Now that Antonio Conte has supposedly told Fabregas that he is not a part of Chelsea’s future, some Gooners are taking up the cry to bring Fabregas back to North London and let him retake the place was always supposed to be his.

It’s a thought, that’s for sure. The man has 37 assists at Chelsea these past three years, despite not having a consistent spot on the team. And I would have to believe that being back at the Emirates would fill him with a sense of relief, given that he always claimed to love Arsenal.

But at the same time, while Fabregas may feel like a fairy tale transfer, there are significant dangers in this game. For starters, It is said that Jose Mourinho is trying to bring him to Manchester United to reunite. And frankly, the risk of him going to Mourinho over back to Arsenal, that is kind of scary.

That isn’t my biggest concern though. My biggest concern is the idea that Fabregas would come back to North London and push someone else out. Someone who is more loyal like Aaron Ramsey.

At 30 years old, you can’t tell me Fabregas would be okay coming over here and playing the secondary competitions, earning his way back into a starting XI again. Not at his age, with the other opportunities that are out there.

If Fabregas comes over, I have to think that the assumption would be that he pushes out someone like Ramsey, who works so damn hard to find some sort of consistency. And he may finally be finding it in this brand new formation.

There are circumstances where a Fabregas return could be whimsical and wonderful, but there is an intrinsic danger to it that may not be worth the efforts. Especially if Chelsea really are looking to “cash in” on the Spaniard. There are better options. Long-term options with less snake-like traits. Let’s think about this long and hard before we go worshiping the idea.
