Arsene Wenger has admitted that Aaron Ramsey could be the next captain of Arsenal , making him the hero that players and fans alike deserve.

Arsenal’s captaincy used to mean quite a bit more than it does currently. Currently, the captaincy is more of an honorary title. Per Mertesacker and Mikel Arteta are both recent captains, neither of whom were ever on the pitch to exercise their position of leadership, so it fell on Laurent Koscielny or Theo Walcott.

The former isn’t all that outspoken and the latter is Theo Walcott.

To be fair, there haven’t been that many options. Aaron Ramsey has always stood out as perhaps the only option, with Olivier Giroud in the conversation, but facing the same circumstances as Mertesacker or Arteta. He doesn’t play enough.

Wenger, at long last, agrees. He was asked whether the Welshman could bet he next captain of the Gunners and here is what he had to say, as quoted by the Metro:

"Why not? It is all there. He has maturity, has improved technically and is more conscious of the importance of his technical qualities. His game is clean. He has a huge physical power. The target for him will be to have 30 games."

I can’t think of a better way to put it. And he didn’t even include Ramsey’s heroics in the FA Cup as another added perk. Nor the fact that he will never not play 90 minutes. To have a captain that is out there every minute of every game? That’s something we haven’t had since Cesc Fabregas.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

I have always enjoyed the idea of Ramsey being the captain, simply because of his character. He has captained the Wales national team as well, so it’s not like it would be a new position for him. This is the club that gave him his big chance and had so much patience and belief in him throughout his lengthy recovery phase.

That is something that you can see being paid back each time he takes the pitch. He is an engine, someone who can lead by example on the pitch.

Fans and players alike should be absolutely tickled by this idea. Fans know Ramsey as a hero already for his late second, trophy winning goals. They know him as someone who will always give his all. Slap an armband on that and its quite simple to rally behind.

Players know him as similar – an engine, a miracle worker at times and a tireless competitor.

Plus, like Wenger says, he plays a clean game. He doesn’t make rash decisions and he always keeps a level head.

If he can avoid injury this year, maybe we can all rally behind a classic captain at long last. Someone like what Liverpool had in Steven Gerard, someone who embodies the club and wants nothing more than to keep pushing.
