Derby day is upon us, folks, and what a contest we’ve got in store!

Arsenal breezed past their lifeless north London rivals twice last season as they secured their first Premier League victory away at Tottenham since 2014. However, Spurs have since been galvanised by Ange Postecoglou’s arrival and currently sit level on points with the Gunners at this early stage in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

After working a mini-miracle to beat Sheffield United last weekend, the visitors will be confident of securing their first league win at the Emirates since 2010.

However, Arsenal depicted their supreme credentials in the week as they completely overwhelmed PSV in a 4-0 thumping to celebrate their Champions League return. The Gunners highlighted their potency against teams that surrender space in transition which stands them in good stead ahead of the derby.

A cracking contest is in store, that’s for sure.

Arsenal team news

Arteta admitted that he has a few dilemmas heading into Sunday’s derby, but he hasn’t yet ruled Gabriel Martinelli out of the game. However, Leandro Trossard deserves to keep his place in the team.

Kai Havertz could be favoured over Fabio Vieira after looking more comfortable in the week, while there shouldn’t be any changes to the Gunners’ defence after their impressive showings against PSV and Everton.

That means David Raya will start his third consecutive game for the club.

Tottenham team news

The visitors announced in the week that Ivan Perisic suffered a ‘complex’ ACL injury in training and will be out for the remainder of the season. Rodrigo Bentancur has also been missing since February with an ACL tear.

There aren’t too many other injury concerns for Spurs with Bryan Gil sidelined until October.

While Postecoglou can now call upon the services of Brennan Johnson and a rejuvenated Richarlison, it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if he sticks with the same starting XI this weekend.

Arsenal vs Tottenham predicted lineups

Arsenal: Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Rice, Havertz, Odegaard; Saka, Jesus, Trossard.

Tottenham: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Sarr, Maddison; Kulusevski, Son, Solomon.

Tottenham’s recent form

Bournemouth 0-2 Tottenham (26/08) – Premier League

Tottenham 2-0 Man Utd (19/08) – Premier League

Prediction

Arsenal were grateful for PSV’s proactive but haphazard approach in the week, and they’ll face a similarly brave side on Sunday. However, Tottenham should fare much better stopping Arsenal’s counter and defending their own box compared to the porous Dutch side.

Spurs are riding a wave of momentum under Ange right now, and there’s no doubt that their wide rotations, aggression without the ball, and swagger in possession will give Arsenal something to think about. They’ll make this a game, but Arsenal are slowly maturing into an outfit capable of weathering any storm, and it’ll be tough for Spurs to claim anything this weekend.

Wednesday’s victory was exactly what the Gunners needed, and I think they’ll crush Ange’s positive wave on Sunday with a statement win.

Prediction: Arsenal 3-1 Tottenham
