Arsenal closing in on signing Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães, according to multiple reports.

The Gunners have been pursuing the Brazil international for over a month and despite the Magpies insisting they won't sell their skipper, rumours are suggesting a deal is now close.

There is now a growing expectation that Guimarães will be joining Mikel Arteta's side this summer and his arrival will be a huge boost for the Spaniard's midfield and squad depth.

HandofArsenal reported via X that Arsenal are set to present a package that will total in the region of £80million while BBC Sport also stated Arteta's side are aiming to agree a deal in the coming days.

Their interest in signing Guimarães was first reported in late June when David Ornstein and James McNicholas of The Athletic revealed that the club had seen a verbal offer worth less than £60m for the midfielder turned down.

Rumours and reports continued to surface, but consistently explained that the Gunners had not engaged in club-to-club talks with Newcastle and were working through intermediaries with the hopes of signing Guimarães.

While the Magpies remained adamant in their stance that their captain is not for sale, Ornstein reported earlier this month that the player had informed his club of his desire to leave and join the Premier League champions.

Arsenal eventually took the decision to open talks with Newcastle and place a £70m bid, which they seem to be building on with this latest update.

Reports throughout the transfer saga have suggested sources within the Tyneside club claim no approach has been made with no club-to-club talks taking place, but if today's updates are to be true, Guimarães will be becoming a Gunner soon.

He will add plenty of talent to Arteta's setup and will also provide much-needed depth in midfield to allow the likes of Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi rest throughout the season. The former made 55 appearances across all competitions last campaign and was pushed even closer to the limit as he played in seven of England's eight World Cup games.

Guimarães could be deployed as a starter alongside Rice or as a backup option that comes in when his English counterpart needs a chance to reset. Arteta showed hesitance to bring Christian Nørgaard into high-stakes games, but the Brazilian should possess the quality to be introduced for moments that matter.

However, no deal has been agreed just yet so fans shouldn't get too excited, but if the reports suggesting Guimarães is expected to join Arsenal this summer are true, he will be yet another incredible addition to a side looking to defend the Premier League title.
