Mikel Arteta has a knack for signing former Man City players. Can't blame him for sticking to what he knows, but that won't be the case with Leroy Sane.
Arsenal must be active in the summer transfer window. The Gunners had a frankly underwhelming season, bowing out at two semifinals and finishing second by some distance in the Premier League.
There was even a point in time where Champions League qualification wasn't a guarantee, and that's not a habit Arsenal have gotten into over the last few seasons. Therefore, it's clear that reinforcements are needed to keep their trajectory going upward.
Arsenal kiss goodbye to the thought of signing former Man City winger
Any Arsenal fan who had hopes of signing Leroy Sane can kiss those hopes goodbye. Fabrizio Romano has teased a "Here We Go" label on his Galatasaray move, meaning he's as good as gone.
It's not yet at "Here We Go" stage, but Romano anticipates this will be the case soon. The transfer guru is very rarely wrong, so Arsenal's hope of signing Sane are on a very thin, almost non-existent tightrope.
In his own words, Romano said: "Leroy Sane will become a Galatasaray player on contract until June 2028, as revealed this morning! A deal (has been) almost agreed between parties, with a formal signature to follow, the player’s camp is in Istanbul to complete all steps. Here we go, soon."
Leroy Sane is out of contract this month, but he won't renew at Bayern Munich. This was anticipated to be the case for some time, hence the links to Arsenal.
Of course, Mikel Arteta and Leroy Sane have history of working together at Arsenal. This is a relationship which Arteta maintained with the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Raheem Sterling, but it won't be maintained with Leroy Sane.
Arsenal weren't overly relying on Sane. They hadn't built their entire summer strategy around him, and they will have other options in mind. If anything, he was merely a market opportunity due to the nature of him being out of contract.
That said, it's a missed market opportunity, so it remains a tough blow for Arsenal fans.
