Mikel Arteta was at a loss to figure out how Arsenal didn't beat Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Stop me if you've heard this before Arsenal fans.

The Gunners create ample chances, and go close on several but never score. Then, subsequently, either drop points or lose a game they shouldn't, leaving fans furious. That's what has happened again after Arsenal's FA Cup loss on penalties to Manchester United.

Kai Havertz was the biggest perpetrator, missing several almost unmissable chances, while Martin Odegaard missed a second-half penalty with a total of 26 shots to United's seven telling the tale of the game, and mind you, the Gunners played with an extra man for the best part of 60 minutes (adding in extra time).

It has been a familiar theme for the Gunners this season: Chance after chance has gone begging, much to the frustration of the fanbase. Now, Arsenal's season is teetering on the brink.

And while fans are shaking their heads at disbelief that their team couldn't get the win, Mikel Arteta is even more bewildered that the Gunners didn't win the contest.

"Incredible how we didn’t win the game, that’s basically to sum up, the dominance, the superiority in relation to the opposition and everything we did to try to win the game and that’s it," Arteta said via arsenal.com. "We didn’t get what we deserve clearly, but there is an element about putting the ball in the back of the net, we did it once, with the amount of situations, chances, penalties that we had, we didn’t. We haven’t got rewarded and that’s the downside to it."

So that is bad enough, right?

Now we add in the injury to Gabriel Jesus, and while we won't speculate, there are fears it could be an ACL injury or even a meniscus injury to his knee, but it is yet another hammer blow to Arsenal's attacking options.

"Big worry," Arteta added on Jesus' injury. "That's my feeling. He had to come off on a stretcher with a lot of pain. Touching his knee, it’s not looking good."

So, we add in the missed chances, the missed penalty, getting knocked out of the FA Cup leaving the very real possibility of another trophyless season, plus the injury to Jesus and it is a dark place to be.

Oh, and we still have the best part of half a season left, plus the north London derby up next.

Fire this season into the sun.
