Arsenal has contacted Eberechi Eze and are currently working together to discuss deal conditions. This is great, but it's not what Arsenal needs most.
From Zubimendi to Norgaard to Mosquera, when will Arsenal sign a striker? Sure, any addition is welcome, but if a striker isn't signed come the end of the transfer window, those additions will only paper over the cracks.
Arsenal fans risk sounding like a broken record, but let's face it, the transfer need is clear as day and obvious for anyone to see. The missing piece over the last few seasons has been the lack of a striker.
But... Kai Havertz did a good job as a striker last season, didn't he?
No, he didn't. He did an adequate job, but nowhere near title-winning level. This is the standard Arsenal must hold themselves to for progression.
Arsenal make contact to sign Eberechi Eze
According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal is now targeting Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace. In fact, they are past the interest stage already as the Gunners have already approached the player's entourage over the weekend.
Naturally, as fate would have it, Tottenham are also interested in signing Eze this summer. Both North London clubs promise European football, whereas Spurs are obviously looking to rebuild under a new manager.
Both destinations would come of interest to Eze if he wishes to remain located in London. The question then becomes: red or white?
On paper, there is one clear answer, and we won't be entertaining the other.
Eberechi Eze must choose Arsenal, but Arsenal must choose a striker
Arsenal is in a much more promising position than Spurs, having competed for the Premier League title over the last few seasons. Eze would have noticed this, as well as the project presented by Mikel Arteta.
The next step for Arsenal is to win some silverware. However, they've proven they cannot do this with their current crop, hence the interest in one of the Premier League's best midfielders.
Look, Eze would be a great signing if it's pushed over the line. However, Arsenal cannot fall into the trap of signing Eze and then forgetting about a striker. If Eze comes at the expense of a striker, then everybody knows which position Arsenal must prioritise by now.
