Arsenal are willing to pay more than Martin Zubimendi's £51m release clause to sign him this summer, but such a payment structure will benefit the Gunners.

The summer transfer window is poised for a mini-break following the start of the Club World Cup, with FIFA deciding to open the window early in order for clubs competing at the revamped tournament to bolster their squads in time for it.

While Arsenal aren't one of the 32 teams involved, they've been able to press ahead with potential deals. However, it looks like their summer will get going at the start of the second window on 16 June. Kepa Arrizabalaga and Zubimendi will soon become their first signings.

While there has been some background noise regarding a potential Real Madrid hijacking, Zubimendi will sign for Arsenal this summer. Madrid's move for Xabi Alonso to succeed Carlo Ancelotti may have tempted the midfielder given that they developed a great relationship while Alonso was coaching Real Sociedad's reserves, but Mikel Arteta has seemingly worked his magic to convince the Spanish metronome.

Zubimendi's subtle brilliance was on full display during the UEFA Nations League final on Sunday night, although Spain were beaten by Iberian rivals Portugal on penalties. It was the sort of performance that should excite supporters over Zubimendi's potential impact in north London ahead of a pivotal season.

And while The Athletic report that the Gunners will pay more than the midfielder's £51m release clause, in doing so, they can manage the fee over several years as opposed to paying in one lump sum. Arsenal are now expected to sign Zubimendi for £55m.

The agreement with Sociedad should hand the club greater wriggle room in negotiations for other targets this summer. Andrea Berta is still working on signing the club's number nine for the long haul as well as options out wide.

Benjamin Sesko has emerged as Arsenal's guy up top, but RB Leipzig continue to demand a big fee despite their need to sell. Leroy Sane is popping up in rumour mills as a potential free agent option to bolster Arsenal's width, and the Gunners remain optimistic about landing a big scalp in the form of Real Madrid's Rodrygo.

Alonso may have asserted his appreciation for the Brazilian upon his Madrid arrival, but the Brazilian's future remains in some doubt.
