Mikel Arteta's team has a potentially easier route to the Champions League final as they could now avoid Barcelona. Barca were defeated 2-0 by Atletico Madrid last night at the Camp Nou. Diego Simeone, who is known for his defensive play, should be able to guide his side to sustain their lead in the home second leg.

Not long ago, there was optimism that Arsenal could do the quadruple. However, hopes of this came crashing down when the Gunners lost 2-0 to Manchester City in the EFL Cup final. Doing the treble was then off the cards when Mikel Arteta's side were defeated 2-1 by Southampton in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Arsenal are still nine points clear at the top of the Premier League. However, City has a game in hand and faces the Gunners on April 19. Arsenal cannot afford any more slip-ups if they are to finally win a Premier League title for the first time since the 2003/04 season.

The Gunners could still do the double if they win the Premier League and the Champions League. They have one foot in the semi-finals after defeating Sporting CP 1-0 away from home in the first leg of their tie.

Can Arsenal still do the double?

Arsenal will fancy their chances against Atletico, who are fourth in La Liga. Barcelona, who are top of Spanish soccer's top flight, would be a much more daunting prospect. The other side of the draw sees a potentially daunting prospect for the Gunners in the final. The defending champions, Paris Saint-Germain, have a 2-0 lead over Liverpool. Whilst Bayern Munich defeated Real Madrid 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Gunners have never won the Champions League; they reached the final in 2006. However, despite taking the lead through a Sol Campbell header, with 10-men they went on to lose 2-1 to Barcelona.

The Premier League is what Gunners fans appear to want the most after being runners-up in the last three seasons. However, banishing the demons of the 2006 Champions League final would also be great for them.

For all the great work that Arteta has done since he took over at Arsenal, he still needs to deliver more silverware. He so far has only one FA Cup to his name as Arsenal boss. They have also won two Community Shields, but not many supporters see that glorified friendly match as a proper trophy.
