Arsenal's push for a forward looks set to go down to the wire, and their attentions are reportedly turning to Bayern Munich's Mathys Tel.
Many believed bolstering the frontline was a priority this month even before Bukayo Saka tore his hamstring and Gabriel Jesus ruptured his ACL. Mikel Arteta has made it clear that he's keen for the club to bring in attacking reinforcements, but Arsenal are yet to make a single move in the January transfer window.
Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko have been linked, but neither Wolves nor RB Leipzig are willing to part ways with such a prized asset midway through the season. Athletic Club's Nico Williams continues to be linked also, but financing a deal remains tricky.
However, it appears that one of those 'market opportunities' Arteta often notes has manifested during the final week of the window.
Arsenal to make late push for Bayern Munich's Mathys Tel
According to Miguel Delaney of the Independent, Arsenal are 'investigating' a move for Bayern Munich's Tel. The talented young Frenchman has once again struggled for minutes in Bavaria this season and is keen on leaving the club before the deadline in order to earn regular game time.
Tel's played just 396 minutes for Bayern across all competitions this term and is yet to score.
However, the 19-year-old is blessed with bags of potential, and he'll be keen to prove a point once he departs Munich with a whole host of clubs interested. Chelsea, Manchester United, and Marseille have also been linked.
Tel is understood to be open to a move to north London with Arsenal's injury situation likely allowing the teenager to play a big role for the Gunners during the second half of the season. However, Bayern. do not want to part ways with the forward permanently, and it remains to be seen whether Arsenal would be willing to bring Tel in on a dry six-month loan (without an option or obligation to buy in the summer).
That's the stumbling block the Gunners will be weighing up. Would they be willing to harbour the development of Tel without reaping any benefits in the long run? Moreover, while the teenager is gifted, we can't expect him to join the club and play a leading role. He's a gifted option boasting versatility and a clinical edge off both feet, but it'll take time for the kid to settle. Would it be worth it if he's only here for six months?
If Bayern are willing to include an option to buy in the deal, Arsenal should be all over it.
