After breaking their Champions League knockout duck last year, Arsenal are aiming for a more seamless progression into the quarter-finals in 2025.
A round of 16 tie against an out-of-sorts PSV Eindhoven side appears, on the surface, kind for Mikel Arteta's Gunners, but the club's current situation is rendering every duel a slog.
Arsenal head into their upcoming two-legged affair with the Dutch champions off the back of two consecutive scoreless outings. The absence of goalscorers is undermining the sturdy foundations installed by the manager, and another Premier League dip means Europe looks like the club's saving grace in year six of the Arteta project.
Arsenal faced off against several teams for the first time in many a year during the league phase, but PSV are a side Arteta's Gunners have grown familiar with. Here's a complete rundown of the historical head-to-head record between the two clubs.
Complete Arsenal vs PSV Eindhoven head-to-head record

- Arsenal: 4
- PSV Eindhoven: 2
- Draws: 4
It took a while for the teams to face off competitively, with their first meetings arriving during the 2002/03 Champions League group stage.
Arsenal first visited Eindhoven, and an early Gilberto Silva strike - then the fastest in the competition's history - set the Gunners on their way. Arsene Wenger's men had performed woefully away from home in the previous season's iteration, but they were emphatic in the Netherlands. Goals from Thierry Henry (x2) and Freddie Ljungberg completed Arsenal's 4-0 rout in the second half.
There was much less to talk about in the reverse fixture at Highbury as the two teams played out a stalemate. Arsenal were without key players and topped the group despite dropping two points.
Before the first knockout stage tussles between the pair, Arsenal met PSV again during the 2004/05 group stage. Centre-back Alex, who'd later played for Chelsea, emerged as an unlikely protagonist during these duels in the 2000s. In their group opener in September 2004, the Brazilian's own goal separated the two sides. In the second leg of their 2006/07 round of 16 match-up, Alex scored at both ends in north London to knock Arsenal out of the competition.

A 15-year gap separated Alex's superb late header and Granit Xhaka's decisive strike in a Europa League group stage fixture.
2022/23 was the campaign when Arteta's project burst into life, and Europe emerged as a secondary thought while the Gunners sparkled domestically. Nevertheless, they started the group stage with four wins from four after Xhaka beat Walter Benitez from just inside the area. However, PSV enacted revenge the following week as they ran out 2-0 winners at the Philips Stadion despite having three goals ruled out for offside. Xavi Simons was dynamite that night.
Last season, Arsenal once again kicked off a Champions League campaign at home to PSV. The Emirates faithful hadn't enjoyed the iconic anthem since Bayern Munich ran up the score during an infamous round of 16 tie in 2017. Given the lengthy wait and the lasting image of the Gunners capitulating while the Bavarians ran riot, there was a cathartic feel to the Gunners' dominant 4-0 victory over the Dutch side.
There was little to play for by the time PSV played host in December, with both managers opting to rotate. Very few remember what went down that evening. Eddie Nketiah scored a fine goal in a 1-1 draw as Arsenal topped the group.
