David Ornstein provides a Bruno Guimaraes update Arsenal fans have been waiting to hear

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United, according to David Ornstein.

The Gunners are in the market for a new central midfielder this summer, after Martin Zubimendi struggled in the latter half of last season and Declan Rice showed signs of fatigue whilst playing through injury at the World Cup.

After initial links to youngsters like Ayyoub Bouaddi and Alex Scott surfaced, it then emerged that the North Londoners were going down a different route. They've turned their attention to a more established and experienced player in Guimaraes, and an agreement with Newcastle is now close.

After weeks of drawn-out negotiations and conflicting reports from certain sections of the media, it appears the chaotic transfer saga for the Brazilian is almost over.

Ornstein reports that there is a desire among all parties for the situation to be resolved, and the 28-year-old is subsequently awaiting permission from the Magpies to undergo his medical.

A helter-skelter saga is set to come to an end, and Arsenal are on the cusp of getting their man.

Barring a dramatic turn of events, Guimaraes will be wearing a red and white shirt, and will ply his trade at the Emirates, next season.

While Ornstein suggests that minor details still need to be agreed upon, the reputable journalist insists that the deal is inevitable at this point. Newcastle are resigned to losing their captain after Arsenal wore them down with weeks of persistence in negotiations.

Once the final details are ironed out, Guimaraes will be permitted to travel to North London or to Ireland, where Mikel Arteta's men are currently training, to complete his medical.

Assuming he passes this medical examination, Guimaraes will then complete paperwork and carry out his media duties before an announcement is made.

Based on Ornstein's report, it'd be reasonable to expect the transfer to be made official later this week, meaning Guimaraes could even feature for the Gunners against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.

However, the more likely outcome is that the Brazil international makes his Arsenal debut next week when Arteta's side face Como at the Emirates.

This should mean he's available in time for the start of the season, and he may even be fit enough to start against Manchster City in the Community Shield on Sunday, August 16th.

After weeks of anxiety, Arsenal fans can finally get excited about the prospect of Guimaraes playing for their team.
