Myles Lewis-Skelly was making a late shout to be part of the England squad with his fine form towards the end of the season. However, Thomas Tuchel still overlooked him despite the recent injury to Tino Livramento.
Much of the talk has been about Trent Alexander-Arnold being overlooked again, as Trevoh Chalobah was brought in to replace Livramento. However, it might have been smarter for Tuchel to bring in Lewis-Skelly instead of Chalobah.
Chalobah is more of a center-back than a right-back, and England only has one left-footed full-back in their roster. Nico O'Reilly is expected to start for the Three Lions at left-back tonight. This is deserved as he favors his left foot and has performed well for Manchester City this season.
England also has Djed Spence, who operates as a left-back despite being right-footed. The starting right-back is likely to be Reece James, but he is injury-prone. Spence or Chalobah could replace him if needed throughout the tournament.
Should Myles Lewis-Skelly have gone to the World Cup?
Lewis-Skelly could have been a very good backup to O'Reilly at left-back. Much of Arsenal man's form at the end of the season came when he played defensive midfield. He could have been a good option for Tuchel in this role, especially as Jordan Henderson is now 36, and could find the warm conditions of playing in North America difficult.
The Arsenal player played the Champions League semi-final second leg and the final itself in the holding midfield role. Lewis-Skelly helped the Gunners see off Atletico Madrid, but ultimately came up short on penalties against Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
Lewis-Skelly has played defensive midfield in three of Arsenal's last five Premier League games. He featured as a left-back in the other two. The Gunners won all of these matches to secure the league title. Tuchel needs winners in his roster, and Lewis-Skelly is no doubt one of them.
The left-back has six England caps, which all came under Tuchel. He even scored on his debut against Albania. However, he has not featured for the Three Lions since a 5-0 win over Latvia in a World Cup qualifier last October. Lewis-Skelly is only 19 and still a part of the England Under-21 setup.
He has missed out on the World Cup this summer. However, the Arsenal player will have plenty more opportunities going forward to feature at major tournaments for his country.
