Tonight, England prepares for their first instalment of the March international break. They face Uruguay, having already qualified for the World Cup. Bukayo Saka will miss out on this one, but Noni Madueke is expected to step into his place on the right wing. It's a great opportunity for him, but unfortunately, one Arsenal player's gain is another's pain.
Bukayo Saka is severely out of form. Despite being known as world-class (for good reason), he's in the worst form of his life. Arsenal are top of the table, but one of their best and most important players is at his rock bottom.
Yes, it's cause for concern for Arsenal. Noni Madueke, on the other hand, has been given a golden opportunity here.
Noni Madueke has an opportunity to leapfrog Bukayo Saka
Noni Madueke will almost certainly start for England tonight. Bukayo Saka, much like Declan Rice, has been afforded rest by Thomas Tuchel (thankfully). Madueke, though, is fresh as a daisy, after not playing a full match since the FA Cup tie against Mansfield at the start of this month.
Tuchel likes Madueke. They have a history together at Chelsea, and Tuchel has been known to give Madueke chances in the early stages of his England career, even while he was out of the Arsenal team.
Madueke is having a better season than Saka. No matter which way you look at it, he is. Saka is afforded more chances because, well, the team is built around him. However, no match-watching fan denies that Arsenal look better with Madueke in the team than Saka.
As they say, form is temporary and class is permanent. There is no expectation that Saka will continue to falter, and instead, everybody expects him to come back stronger. He always seems to, even if this is the first time Arsenal have seen him in form as bad as this.
That said, while form may be temporary, it does present a window of opportunity to Madueke. He is never the type to hope for his teammate's downfall (if anything, he said yesterday that he and Saka row in the same direction no matter who's playing), but Madueke would be foolish not to use this window to build his own case.
There will be plenty of eyes on England tonight. They are, as much as some would hate hearing this, among the favourites to win the World Cup this year. Therefore, Arsenal fans will hope that tonight is the Madueke show.
There's nothing quite like healthy competition for places.
