3 talking points ahead of Arsenal vs Bayern
- The Gunners are in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in 14 years and face a huge test
Arsenal welcome Bayern Munich to the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening for their first Champions League quarter-final since 2010.
The Gunners are heading into the first leg of this tie with Bayern off the back of a convincing 3-0 win away to Brighton that saw them return to the top of the Premier League table.
Mikel Arteta's side reached their first quarter-final in 14 years after a tense penalty shootout win over Porto in March.
With Arsenal hoping to go one step closer to winning their first-ever Champions League title, there are three key talking points ahead of this blockbuster clash.
1. Revenge for previous games
Over the past twenty years, Bayern have been a familiar foe for Arsenal in the Champions League. The two sides have faced one another 12 times in the competition, with eight of these games coming in the knockout stages.
Arsenal have only won three of these 12 games and have never progressed past the German side in the knockout stage. The Gunners' most notorious defeat to Bayern is their 10-2 aggregate loss in the round of 16 of the 2016/17 campaign. Under Arsene Wenger, a lacklustre Arsenal lost 5-1 both home and away in one of the most embarrassing defeats in UCL history.
There is no doubt that Arsenal, now a completely different side under the leadership of Mikel Arteta, will be looking to banish these demons and avenge their previous defeats with a good performance on Tuesday evening.
