Arsenal have some tough decisions to make ahead of the summer transfer window. In order to bring in some more quality, Mikel Arteta must first ponder which players he would like to sell. This is an important conundrum to get right, both for Profit and Sustainability rules AND squad balance in general.
While some decisions are easier to make than others, a decision which has proven difficult is the situation regarding Albert Sambi Lokonga. The midfielder has returned to Arsenal this summer, after a successful loan spell at Luton Town last time out. Now, Mikel Arteta must consider whether or not there will be a place for him in the first team going forward.
Admittedly, with Thomas Partey having just one year left on his contract and linked with a move away from North London this summer, a squad role could open itself up for Albert Sambi Lokonga. But then the question would come down to whether Mikel Arteta actually likes ASL as a player.
Struggling Arsenal midfielder agrees La Liga transfer for next season
According to a report from Football London, Albert Sambi Lokonga has agreed personal terms to join La Liga side Sevilla on loan for the 2024/25 season. It is believed that Sevilla are content with paying Arsenal £2.5m in the way of a loan transfer fee.
When ASL returns from his loan spell, he will have just one year remaining on his Arsenal contract. Therefore, should Arsenal wish to sell, they will be in a weakened negotiation period. Unfortunately, this has become all too common for fans to witness, with Arsenal making a bad habit out of letting their star players leave for below their market value.
If we are being cutthroat and honest, which Mikel Arteta has to be in situations like this, the chances of Albert Sambi Lokonga making it in the Arsenal lineup are very slim. In fact, it is almost impossible to envision a future where the Belgian is called upon in the starting lineup by Arteta.
His time at the club since 2021 has been nothing short of misery. It is much better for all parties involved if Arsenal sell him this summer, should they find a club willing to take a permanent punt. Only time will tell in that regard but as things stand, the loan move to Sevilla seems like the most feasible option.
Do you think Albert Sambi Lokonga has what it takes to make it at Arsenal?
