Premier League betting odds: What are Arsenal's chances of winning the title again?

It is just 62 days since Arsenal hoisted aloft the Premier League trophy at Selhurst Park. At the fourth attempt under Mikel Arteta, the Gunners were finally crowed champions of England once again. Now though, it is less than four weeks until they begin their title defence with a Friday night home game against Coventry City. So, are Arsenal favourites to retain the trophy next May?

Arsenal are currently bookies favourites across the board to win next season's Premier League title, which is probably to be expected, given that they are defending champions. So, who are viewed as the other leading contenders?

Part of the reason Arsenal are such strong favourites is the uncertainty around other clubs. All other members of the "big six" have changed managers, at least once, in 2026. Enzo Maresca has the tall order of succeeding Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, while Andoni Iraola is the new man in charge at Liverpool, looking to make the step up from Bournemouth.

Meantime, he had an enormous impact last season, but how will Michael Carrick juggle domestic and Champions League football at Manchester United? Elsewhere, Xabi Alonso has to navigate all the chaos at Chelsea while, across the capital, frankly, why are Tottenham even on this list? Roberto De Zerbi's primary aim has to be avoid a third successive 17th place finish.

That said, were Arteta's team to retain the title come next May, it would be an historic achievement for Arsenal. Despite winning two league titles under George Graham and then three with Arsène Wenger at the helm, including the Invincibles, neither managed to go back-to-back. In fact, the Gunners have not retained an English top-flight title since the mid 1930s.

Back then, Arsenal actually won three in a row, first becoming a dominant force under Herbert Chapman. However, he tragically died of pneumonia while still manager in January 1934, with Joe Shaw and George Allison carrying on his legacy by securing three successive First Division trophies.

In the Premier League-era, only Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United, Chelsea under José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola's Manchester City have ever won consecutive titles. If you go even further back, Liverpool achieved this in the late-70s and mid-80s, but no one else has gone back-to-back since Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1959, the same year the first UK motorway opened. Thus, if Arteta and his team were to achieve this, he would join the pantheon of legendary managers.

However, it felt as though the entire club, players, coaches, backroom staff and supporters, were all building towards winning the Premier League title. Now that has been achieved, how easy will it be to go again? Well, let's take a look around Europe at other examples of when a team ends an elongated title draught and how they performed the following year.

European clubs season after ending title draught

Of the clubs around Europe who had previously won titles before, but then endured long draughts, none were able to go back-to-back after getting that first one over the line. Napoli finished tenth the following season, but then were Serie A champions the year after that; one can only wonder how many Gooners would settle for a repeat of that.

Meantime, Atlético Madrid have also won La Liga again after their first under Diego Simeone while, following nearly two decades without a Primeira Liga trophy, Sporting CP have won three of the last six. Thus, in modern times, it is essentially unprecedented for anyone in a major league to achieve what Arsenal are aiming for. Nevertheless, Arteta's team are favourites for a reason, even if fans are panicking about injuries, player burnout, a lack of transfer activity, a tough set of fixtures to start and many other things.
